Walt's Damn Gnarly 17 Knolls Mountain Bike( Ride 12-16 milles/Experierinced/4)
This ride is for strong experienced MTB riders only.
The voices in Walt's head have told him to lead a mountain bike ride on the Western portion of the San Geronimo ridge as soon as possible. It is a beautiful area, and offers the opportunity to view Marin's largest lake, which a lot of people living here might never have seen. The ride will meet at the Forest Knolls Post Office at 9:00 AM on Sunday, August 26 and start at approximately 9:15. Parking is available in the parking lot and across the street. From there, the participants will ride on Sir Francis Drake Blvd. to the Peters Dam fire road trail head. The group will then ride up that fire road to the top of the San Geronimo ridge. After that, the group will be shown a legal trail (marked by signs respecting spotted-owl habitat) looping back to the Peters Dam fire road. The group will discuss multiple options for the downhill descent back to Sir Francis Drake. Options might include a fire road, the new Hunter's Camp trail shortcut, or the Madrone Arch trail. Any trails suggested will, to the best of Walt's limited knowledge, be authorized for mountain biking. There will be a rest break at a spot overlooking Kent Lake. Steep climbs, steep descents, and technical sections make this ride inappropriate for inexperienced riders. Helmets and gloves are mandatory. Poison Oak is an unpleasant possibility in places. The ride duration is expected to be about 3-4 hours. On the plus side, the views and descents are awesome and most of the riding will be in the shade. Walt can be reached at 415-254-0118 or emailed regarding questions
Helmets and gloves are required for all participants.
2 full water bottles or camelback recommended on all MTB rides
